deadsex - a series of work I made at the end of my MA in Photographic Studies.

The doll structures contain human features in an ambiguous context so that they can be used as a vehicle to explore the signifiers of femininity. The anthropomorphism of the dolls echoes the cultural anthropomorphic treatment of dolls, sexual even when they are sexless and suggesting ambiguous sexuality.

Influences:
Tony Oursler's video projections
Angela Carter, 'The Passion of New Eve'
Judith Butler, 'Gender Trouble'

There are people who make things happen, there are people who watch things happen and there are people who wonder what happened.

this a great piece. certain things draw the eye: the void at the center, the expression on the face the lace. but it's the expression on the face that makes this image particularly striking... like she's looking at you, looking at her ambiguous center. your web cam is great tooo. i've got a thing for dolls and all the symbolism they bring with them.

good show,

the orbit of the third eye is wide
Just goes to show merely desensitizing yourself by continual exposure can make visuals that initially disconcert, easier to digest and interpret.
Do you know I cant even put my finger on what it is about dolls that puts me on edge..mannequins too..Even the smell is enough to have the hairs on my neck stand up..probably some messed up childhood incident i've repressed.. :) (Smile) ..This actually is a really interesting concept. Although i'd say it's entirely subjective. This one more than the others for me contains elements signifying femininity that i'm comfortable identifying.
The face is oddly familiar and the eye is really quite beautiful which helps put me at ease. The clothing helps provoke a response of what's proper and feminine.
Thought provoking.
The first thing I noticed was the eye, along with being beautiful it seems to calm me. The lighting and detail is extremely sharp. This is going on my fav. list. Its very deep. Good work.

ugh... *shiver* this surely does freak me out and of course it intrigues me as well.. the simplicity of the still life brings so much.. it looks like you just scanned the doll in, she looks squashed down.. perhaps by society, by "gender" which is a cultural division, stereotypes, a psychotic child. :) (Smile) whatever the case... it really draws the audience into this really warped zone of thought. why is she here? what did she do? Why she looking at me like that!! ahh
