Artist's Comments

An old friend. He likes wearing dresses and he's very fond of shoes. I don't wear dresses. But I did a couple of times when we used to get together on saturday afternoons. I used to feel like I was cross dressing when I wore a dress. It was fun playing around with 'femininity'. We used to have conversations about it. He used to say that he was exploring his 'feminine side'. I used to say that I didn't think putting on a dress turned someone into a woman and that I thought he was *performing* femininity, just like I was, just like everyone is performing something, maybe several things, all the time...

There's an image of both of us here [link]

20 viewings so far and not a single comment. i wonder why? tee hee. it's interesting. the trappings of feminity can lure someone with the possibility of titillation, but as soon as the subject is defined as a male, these trappings no longer have the same power and become farce.
i've often been told that i act somewhat feminine, and i could never understand why. other than the fact that i always respond to people in the same way, regardless of gender. by treating females the exact same why i treat males i'm all of a sudden less male myself.
my girlfriend never wears womens "things". make up etc. etc. she says it feels too wierd. i'm glad she doesn't. honestly, i think it's all pretty strange myself.

i agree with you, it's all performance.

Absolutely fantastic composition, I love the play on the "masquerade", and the pose is perfect, emphasizes the ritual and contortions of the "putting on" of "femininity" more generally. And, as well, I love how you have laid this piece out, with the slight skew and fractured borders, particularising its constructedness. Your work is amazing.

i dont think femininity or maculinity should exist....just ourselves and how we are
classing things into groups gets people nowhere but in holes of descrimination and ignorance
but he seems nice :) (Smile) and dresses rule so yay for him... my ex bf used 2 wear dresses....he had nice legs

i love this composition... the contrast is high and allows you to really concentrate on him... almost fooled me to think he was a woman :) (Smile) he's pretty thinly built... interesting how dressing with a dress will make you a woman.. it's what is accepted but back in the old days, men used to wear stockings and ruffles... now it's reversed isn't it?
i happen to enjoy when some men wear makeup.. like eyeliner or nail polish... i find it quite alluring.. but maybe i'm strange?

I guess I'm supposed to find it shocking that this is a guy in woman's clothes, but for some reason it was simply that pose that made me go, "gy-gah!" For just one second I thought you'd truly found a quadrapedal human being, and it gave me quite the little scare! The only thing that saved me was the fact he looks very hunched over. If there was only some way you could have made his back totally straight I really would've screamed. Great pic!

Wow... this is unusual and crazy. Yeah. And that's why i like it! :D (Big Grin)
